O.K., schools need computers.
High Schools have some students that are pretty good techies. They can diagnose and repair computers. They can place these computers in their school, and schools in their district. What's next? Have a collection Drive! CRC will assist student clubs; Have a collection drive in your school district! CRC is soliciting municipalities and high school student groups in California for events in 2003. Call or email : info@crc.org.

It runs sooooo slow! Performance, PLEASE!
Running a Windows-based computer? Remember to run "scandisk" and "disk defragmenter" often, and at least once-a-month. You can find this under: start > programs > accessories > system tools. When you run scandisk, I suggest you select "Thorough", and check "Fix all Errors". After this, when you run defragmenter, I suggest you go into "settings", and you UNclick "Rearrange program files..." and UNclick "check the drive for errors"(some versions of windows). You WILL notice significant improvement in the speed of your computer with these simple maintenance tools.

Computer just toooo old?
A computer that is working OK can almost always be used for a word processor, and to access text email. I hear there are lots of students without computers to do their homework. Here they are!! Just because your computer will not do games..... Remember there are dedicated game machines (PS2, Gamecube, XBOX) and more, that sell for CHEAP and if you use these to play games, you don't mess up your computer.

Gimme FREE stuff!! Software, PLEASE.
Here are a few programs and products I like, that our volunteers have found and put to the test. For screen wallpaper, "webshots" is great. Our volunteers DO NOT use it for the screensaver because it uses resources and the older computers are slow enough! Your choice: do OR don't. Use their website as a home page or for daily updates of new images. We prefer not to, we just don't like our computer going off on its own to do stuff without us (telling it to).

For word processing, spreadsheets, etc. (office stuff, including presentations) check out openoffice.org . This is an amazing program. It is available on the web and will read and write to even the most recent software from "you-know-who".

Saving and downloading files -
Files are just too big for floppy discs now-a-days. Along with zip drives and CD Writers, there are the new generation of USB storage devices that fit in your pocket. Remember, though, that older computers probably do not have a USB port, and most computers do have a CD Rom, so burn your drivers and updates on a CD and .......

Which brings us to "COMPUTER STANDSTILL"!! Captain, I've got a virus or a worm!! (sorry!)
A good virus protection program is a must, and it's no good unless you go for updates, daily or weekly, to your programs internet site and download the updates. The products I know the best are McAfee, Norton, and Panda (in alphabetical order, I might add).

Also, go to the website of your Browser and Mail program and make sure to download the updates there, too. Lastly, your operating system also requires updates. Check with the website of your op sys.

Break time!! See you all next month. Thanks for reading, and check out the rest of our site. Regards!
